Innovation and Leadership in Social Sector - 8th May 2010

A Workshop on “Innovation and Leadership in Social Sector” was conducted on 8th May 2010 by the Centre for Social Initiative and Management (CSIM). About 50 participants attended this workshop.

During the workshop, Mr. Gregory Rake, India Program Director, Rural Development Institute; Mr. Srivyal Vuyyuri, Founder , Sphoorti Foundation; Maj. (Retd.) Shiva Kiran, Founder, Sukuki Exnora; Mr. Vinayak Kalletla, Founder Principal, Abhyasa Residential Public School; Brig. (Retd.) I.N. Bhatia and Prof. K.L.Srivastava (CSIM) presented various innovative approaches and leadership experiences in social sector organizations.

The key points discussed during the workshop are:

  1. Leaders have to train their mind to think and do things differently. People have to see things differently to innovate.
  2. Leaders should be self conscious. They should know their strengths and weaknesses.
  3. Taking time to reflect on one’s strategies is an important aspect of leadership.
  4. Servant leadership model is highly useful for social sector. In order to be a servant leader, one needs the following qualities: listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, and networking.
  5. There is need for change in our thought processes and the ways of tackling social problems.
  6. Community participation in development programs contributes to the success of these programs. Therefore, NGO leaders should have skills for involving the concerned community and its leaders in relevant programs.
  7. The Schools can play a significant role in community development if they are properly sensitized about development issues and approaches. Children should be given opportunity to participate in community service.
The workshop was highly interactive. The feedback from participants was positive and encouraging.
